What Does Rhinoplasty Surgery Involve?

First you will have a consultation with a rhinoplasty surgeon. This determines the exact changes you’d like to your nose and any difficulties you are experiencing.

Once decided, you’ll be put under general anesthetic and the surgeon will mark the incision points. When you’re asleep, alterations to the nose will be made, usually by accessing the nose internally.

Bone and cartilage are manipulated to gain the desired shape. If size needs to be altered, incisions are made in the nose creases. Surgery lasts for around 2 hours and requires an overnight stay.

Structure of the Nose

The nose is the primary organ for smell and it’s also involved in functions such as tasting. Nose shape is determined by bone and cartilage, with the nasal septum separating the nostrils and dividing the nasal cavity into two parts. The three major sections of the nose include:

  • Nasal bones in the upper section
  • Lateral cartilages which join the nasal septum in the middle
  • Lower lateral cartilage which binds the nostrils together

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct functional and cosmetic problems of the nose. The space between your two nostrils is known as the septum. Different types of deviated septum include:

  • A C-shape deviated septum
  • An S-shape deviated septum

Septoplasty repositions the middle of the nose, making it easier for you to breathe. It also creates a more natural looking nose shape, giving you confidence back.

Osteotomy

An osteotomy nose job involves repositioning of the nasal bones. This type of surgery is recommended for patients with a crooked nose, a nasal fracture or different types of nose trauma. It can also be used to straighten out a nasal hump and to narrow the nose.

Recovery may take up to two weeks after osteotomy surgery. A splint and bandage is required to stay on the nose for up to a week. Sleeping upright is encouraged for at least one week after surgery.

Alar Reduction

Alar reduction is a surgical procedure used to reduce nostril width. This surgery is often used when a patient has excessively flared nostrils that aren’t in proportion to the rest of the face. It can be used as part of a rhinoplasty surgery, or, as a stand-alone procedure.

How Alar Reduction Works

Your surgeon will discuss with you at length to determine your desired outcome from the surgery. Incision points will be marked on your nose and you’ll be put under a general anesthetic. The next part of the procedure includes:

  • An incision where the nostril meets the cheek
  • Nostril wedge is removed and the incision sewn shut
  • Incision is hidden in the crease of the nose
  • Nose appears smaller, narrower and more in proportion
