Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure used to improve the appearance of eyelids and to repair functional problems. As you age, the muscles surrounding the eyes weaken and the skin on the eyelids can stretch causing sagging, drooping and dark circles.

This not only makes you look older, but can reduce your side (peripheral) vision. Blepharoplasty removes sagging skin, makes you look more alert and youthful, plus it eliminates any vision problem the loose skin may have caused.

What Eyelid Surgery Can Treat?

Eyelid surgery is used for cosmetic reasons and to improve sight in those with sagging eyelids obstructing their vision. Other types of eyelid surgery include sub-brow excision, transconjunctival fat removal and epicanthoplasty which is used to produce a larger eye opening. Eyelid surgery treats:

Who is Right for Eyelid Surgery?

Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty are in good health, don’t smoke and have realistic expectations for surgery. Most are over 35 years of age, but it’s possible to have the surgery done earlier if you suffer from droopy or asymmetrical eyelids, dark circles or excess upper eyelid skin that impairs vision.

How to Prepare for Eyelid Surgery?

Before booking eyelid surgery, a qualified specialist eye surgeon will meet with you to discuss your medical history and expectations for the surgery. Next, you’ll be booked in for a:

If you smoke, you’ll be asked to quit at least two weeks before surgery, as this can impair the healing process. Your doctor will ask you to stop taking any medication that increases bleeding and you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery.

Upper Blepharoplasty

As you age, the upper eyelids can start to droop, with excess skin on the upper eyelids and eyebrows. This not only causes a sleepy appearance, but it can actually start to obscure your vision.

Upper blepharoplasty (upper eyelid surgery) is the answer, removing saggy loose skin or fat, correcting the problem and giving you a more youthful, alert look.

During surgery, an incision is made 6-8mm above the eyelashes. From here, any excess skin or fat is removed.

Eye Ptosis

Eye ptosis is a surgical procedure used to correct drooping eyelids. There are multiple eye ptosis techniques used, depending on the severity of correction needed.

Ptosis surgery usually involves the shortening of the muscles or tendons that raise the lid. These are then reattached to the patient’s eyelid using sutures, which are removed around one week after surgery.

Double Eyelid

Double eyelid surgery is a type of surgery technique, used to create creases in the upper eyelids, so double eyelids are formed. Two common surgical methods include:

Natural adhesion technique. With this option, the surgeon will remove tissue through a fine incision in the skin. This creates a more naturally shaped eyelid, adhering the tissue between the skin and eye muscles.

Double Eyelid

Conventional incision technique. This method removes unnecessary fat, muscle and skin along the eyelid line and is ideal for thick eyes and drooping eyelids.

Lower Blepharoplasty

With age, excess fat and deep grooves start to form under the eyes, causing the lower eyelids to sag. Lower blepharoplasty (lower eyelid surgery) is a way to combat this.

This surgery repairs the weakening of under eyes muscles and removes excessive intraorbital fat to restore the patient’s confidence and give a more youthful, awake look. It can even improve the appearance of wrinkles, by tightening the skin in the under-eye area.

Sub-Brow Excision

This procedure improves the appearance of sagging eyelids whilst maintaining the double eyelid line. As a person ages, skin hooding can hide the eyelid crease and even block the field of vision.

Sub-brow excision is a surgical procedure, designed to tighten the muscles and give a more youthful, energetic appearance. The surgical incision is small and made close to the eyebrow, so a scar is less visible.
