Chin Surgery
Chin surgery is otherwise known as mentoplasty. This type of surgery reshapes the chin, either adding to it with an implant, or reducing it via neck muscle tightening or by removing excess bone.
Chin surgery is often used to make the facial features more harmonious. It may be suggested for a patient who has rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to achieve better facial proportions.
Why is Chin Surgery Done?
Chin surgery is performed for reconstructive and cosmetic purposes. If you don’t like the appearance of your chin, because it’s either too small, or it juts out too much, surgery will give you the appearance you desire.
For those who’ve had an injury, or were born with a malformation, the chin may appear misaligned or unbalanced. Surgery can realign your chin and make it fit in seamlessly with the rest of your facial features.
Different Types of Chin Surgery
There are two main types of chin surgery that either add to the chin or reduce it. These include:
Chin Implants/Augmentation
Chin augmentation is also known as chin enhancement and is used to improve the contours of the neck, chin and jawline. During surgery, an implant will be placed around the patients chin bone to achieve a more naturally balanced, attractive chin. Chin enhancement helps to strengthen a weak or recessed chin and can help you feel more confident about your appearance.
Chin Reduction Surgery
Chin reduction surgery is used to reduce an over-projected or overly prominent chin. It helps to restore facial balance to create a more naturally harmonious appearance. The surgery is performed by making a small incision in the chin area and removing excess bone so the desired contoured shape is achieved.
Another chin reduction technique is platysmaplasty. This is a type of neck lift surgery where the muscles of the neck are tightened to improve the appearance of a double chin.
